Method: 98' long W5GI dipole oriented E-W connected to Icom IC-7000 (CW mode). SignaLink interface to laptop running Spectrum Lab. During call up, adjusted a GPSDO (Trimble Thunderbolt) referenced, HP 3335A frequency synthesizer to about the same frequency. After key-down, switched the radio input to the synthesizer (through an adjustable attenuator) and adjusted the synthesizer to the same frequency as seen on the waterfall. Read each frequency directly off the synthesizer. No radio or computer sound card calibration is needed with this method, but warmed both up for several hours so they were stable during the FMT. Soapbox: Only had a few seconds of K5CM 30m signal, so measurement won't be too accurate. Heard NO signal at all from W8RKO on 30m. 40m & 80m readings should be reasonable.

Method: Open HPSDR Mercury recvr with 10MHz OCXO calibrated to WWV, CHU. Measurements with WSJT-X FreqCal mode. Soapbox: W8RKO 30m signal was a challenge here in Indiana. On my spectrum display with an FFT bin width of 2.9Hz, the keydown signal was 10dB above the noise at best. Other signals were all 20dB or more above the noise. Thanks for another good FMT!

Method: GPS Locked Flex 6600 offset 100hz and offset measured with "G String Tuner" app on Samsung S20 5g cell phone. Check error against WWV on 5mhz and 10 Mhz. Antennas are a Steppir dipole on 30m and 40m and a Cushcraft R9 Vertical on 80M. Soapbox: All six signals were good in San Jose and hopefully I did all the addition correct for the final results.

Method: Elecraft K3s and zero beat to 'spot' tone. For 40m and 30m I used a fan dipole cut for those bands. For 80m I used a new End Fed wire antenna cut for 80m. This new antenna helped quite a bit. Soapbox: For the 30m run I lost the signal a few seconds after it began, but heard a tone about 5 mins later so I measured that. I have no idea if it was the correct tone. I could not hear W8RKO well enough to measure. Again, I had blast. Thanks.

Method: Injected signal from HP3336B into receiver along with signal from antenna using coax T connector. Observed signal graphically on spectrum display and noted peaks for injected signal and signal from antenna. Used homebrew software using FFT. Soapbox: 80m and 40m signals were solid. I discovered software bug during 30m runs. This bug has been in my software for years and never showed up because this is the first time the FMT used 30m and the bug was only present on 30m runs. I ran a few test runs using WWV on 10Mhz and had results within 0.2 Hz of 10Mhz so I thought things were OK with the software. My bug was related to not considering that the 30m band from 10.10 to 10.15 was a legitimate ham band. My bug was that I was defining the 30m band to go from 10.15 to 10.15 Mhz. That bug caused my view of the band to be VERY NARROW. Specifically ZERO!

Method: All homebrew equipment including a carrier phase tracking receiver, a WWVB referenced frequency standard, end-fed 40 foot wire antenna, and a frequency counter. Method involved phase locking the receiver's DDS LO to the frequency of the unknown carrier minus a 1 kHz offset, measuring the frequency of the receiver's LO over several 10 second integration periods, and taking an average of the readings after factoring in the 1 kHz offset. Details available at: http://www.qsl.net/kd2bd/fmt-methodology.html Soapbox: The solar flux was 74 and Kp-index was 1. No copy of W8RKO on 30 meters. Found K5CM after his TX mishap with a rock-solid signal and a 0.15 Hz p-p FM deviation in readings. On 40, W8RKO had only a 0.05 Hz p-p FM deviation as did K5CM on 80. Method: Same equipment as always. An RSP2 Pro SDR with the external 24MHz reference input driven by a home brew GPS Disciplined oscillator. The software is SDR console which in later versions has a fixed error in it's frequency calculation that needs to be subtracted. A virtual audio cable is used to drive the audio to the WSJT-X software. This prevents the audio from being resampled and introducing another error. WSJT-X is configured in the frequency calibration mode which allows you to measure the audio frequency to 3 decimal places. Soapbox: Thanks to K5CM and W8RKO for putting on the FMT. I had fun as always. The first 30 meter transmission was a little short but I was able to get a reading. The signals were all reasonably strong with lots of QRN on 80 meters. I live in an HOA restricted development so my antennas consist of Hustler whips on my second story deck. I also usually have an s6+ noise level.

AM demodulated signal recorded for analysis. Analysis with SpectrumLab and/or Daqarta software after some clean up with Audacity. Soapbox: The K5CM 30-meter hiccup got me off task. If I'm within a few Hz I'll be surprised. I copied W8RKO so-so on 30-meters but my TS-890 numbers differ from the SDR numbers by 9 HZ or so. We'll see how this pans out. But my biggest problem was with the K5CM 80-meter signal. I couldn't believe this freq was used as there was huge QRM from a digital station, here in the southwest anyway. My results on this one are a SWAG. Although I greatly appreciate the efforts of the two transmitting stations, I'm not fond of the constant tinkering with the format. One minute key down is too short IMHO and the need to copy six different signals is a stretch, as I'm sure some who couldn't copy some signals at all will agree. Still it was fun and I'll do it again next time.

Method: GPS: Lucent/Symmetricom Z3810AS RECEIVER: GPS Locked RACAL 6790/GM Tunable in steps of 1000Hz, 30Hz or 1 Hz. SYNTHESIZER: GPS Locked HP 3336B ZERO BEAT INDICATOR: Tektronix 2213A ANTENNAS: GAP Voyager, GAP Titan DX, NVIS Dipoles 40, 80 & 160m This is a modified . LEGACY ZERO BEAT METHOD… CONFIGURATION: The post-filtered 455 KHz IF from the RACAL is fed to CH A of the Tek. A precise 455,000.000Hz carrier from the HP3336B is fed to the EXT input channel of the Tek. The scope is then set to display 2 cycles of the 455KHz IF waveform, instead of the traditional Lissajous pattern. PROCEDURE: Frequency readings to 1Hz resolution are quickly made by tuning the RACAL to near zero beat with the aid of the Tek scope. If a signal is “dead on” a Hz point, such as WWV, and there is no Doppler, the waveform will not “slip” in either direction but will just vary in amplitude with changes in signal strength, and the "exact" frequency will be the Racal frequency readout. If a signal is not "dead on" a 1Hz point, and the waveform is "slipping" L TO R, then the RACAL is tuned BELOW exact zero beat. If a signal is not "dead on" a 1Hz point, and the waveform is "slipping" R TO L, then the RACAL is tuned ABOVE exact zero beat. If “stepping” the receiver 1Hz causes the direction of "slip" to reverse, the exact frequency is BETWEEN the current and former readout, i.e. between two concurrent 1Hz points. Also, estimates closer than 0.5Hz, of the actual frequency, can be made by comparing the "speed" of the ABOVE and BELOW "slip." The slower "slip" is less than 0.5Hz from that 1Hz point. For more accurate “in-between-Hz” measurements, the RACAL is tuned ABOVE the unknown frequency and the HP3336B is then tuned upward, in 0.001Hz steps, from 455,000.000Hz until the R TO L waveform "slip" stops. The milliHz DELTA is then SUBTRACTED from the RACAL readout to give the “exact” frequency. Using the regular scope waveform allows very quick “zeroing” of signals, even those that are nearly in the noise. I find it much easier to use than the traditional Lissajous pattern. It is also very interesting to note the rate of “slip” that occurs during Doppler shift. Soapbox: 30m rough Doppler K5CM -100dBm W8RKO -80dBm; 40m K5CM -60dBm W8RKO -70dBm; 80m K5CM -50dBm W8RKO -55dBm. 40m 80m Minimal Doppler. No QRM on test frequencies all bands. Method: Receiver: Flex Radio Systems, FLEX-1500 Software: PowerSDR v2.7.2 Antenna system: 135' lazy-'L' sloper with 9:1 balun and MFJ-901B tuner Method: Receiver allowed to warm for at least 30 minutes; receiver calibrated to WWV 25MHz; 'panascope' feature enabled; mode set to 'DSB'; band pass filter ('BPF') set to ±30 Hz; panascope sweep time set to 10 seconds. Flex-1500/PowerSDR frequency display allows resolution to 1 Hz. After closest tuning, panascope will show number of cycles offset over a 10 second period. Tuning up 1 Hz and down 1 Hz will show which direction the offset lies from the closest tuning point. Divide the offset cycles by 10 for tenths of a Hz offset. Soapbox: This is my first involvement with the ARRL FMT. It took some time to discover the capabilities of the Flex receiver and software. Development of a consistent measurement technique was the next step. After that, I began to feel ready enough to participate.

Method: dipole, Flex 6400, WSJT-X freq cal mode, GDO reference. HP3336B synthesizer for calibration Soapbox: Good strong signals here but there was heavy QRM on 80M. The first part of the 30M run from K5CM was not heard except for the last 10S or so. It was as if he forgot to turn on the transmitter after the call up. What happened? The call up was a good strong signal and then nothing.

Method: Frequency reference was the OCXO in my FTDX-5000. Used a Rubidium frequency standard to correct tuning and sound card errors. fldigi was used for data collection. Soapbox: This was my first FMT. I learned a lot and am ready for the next one.

Method: Flex 6600 with Bodnar GPSDO and Spectrum Lab software with a button assigned to a "peak_rf" function to display the tone freq, which was added to the Flex dial freq. to come up with the semi final number. Allowed for some doppler by checking WWV/CHU to get a final freq to submit. Added some "best guess" in with the doppler! Soapbox: (none)

Method: Inject a reference frequency signal into the antenna feed line. Measure the audio frequency difference between the unknown and the reference frequencies with DL4YHF's Spectrum Lab software. Soapbox: Thank you K5CM and W8RKO. K5CM signals into SE Michigan were excellent. W8RKO's 30M signal was in the noise most of the time, but 40M and 80M signals were ok. |
