Method: HP Z3805A 10MHz GPSDO, Marconi 2019 HF synth, HP 3325A LF synth, HP 54601A o'scope, FT-847 in AM/narrow mode, 5BTV antenna, Win10 laptop running SpecLab, Digipan for spotting, EZGPIB driving USB-serial and Prologix USB-GPIB to control and interrogate the instruments and radio, GPSCon for monitoring Z3805A; the 2019 was set to inject a reference beat signal to produce a ~400Hz beat tone, and the 3325A was manually tuned for minimum phase slip between it and the beat tone as seen on o'scope. Each run was also recorded to a .wav file through SpecLab, and at a later time replayed to export data to spreadsheet to refine submission numbers.
Soapbox: Thanks Connie for running the event. 40m signal was strong with much amplitude and phase variation, and the 80m signal was weak but more stable; still had to guess at the submission numbers.

Soapbox: Good signals into Northern Virginia, 40m was received at -72 dBm, 80m at -83 dBm. 80m signal was very stable, 80m signal appeared to split, with the strongest portion taking about a 1 Hz deviation, but the weaker portion appeared to be stable and constant, so that's the value I chose. Fun as always.

Method: RX: Perseus SDR, Dipole 2x17m @ 13m. Added a marker signal to the RX (3597 kHz / 7063 kHz) from a HP3325b locked to a GPSDO. Used a small python script to process the raw IQ data. Extracted phase vs. time of the unknown signal and subtracted the phase of the reference signal. Evaluated the slope of the resulting phase for the parts of the reception with the best SNR. No idea if this works as expected.
Soapbox: Mni tnx Connie! My first FMT. The hardest part was to get out of bed at 03:30 local. I live in the city, so there´s quite some man made noise, but the 40m signal was well received at around -100 dBm peak, going up and down 40 dB with the QSB. 80m was tough with the signal peaking at around -120 dBm. Let´s see if my method produced results close to reality... 73, Matthias, DK4YJ

Method: Set up is mostly old school; I stick with it because it’s paid for. Equipment is a Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V transceiver (CW mode, narrow CW filters and audio DSP with 60-Hz bandwidth), Rockwell/Collins 180S-1 tuner, 40-meter dipole, Fluke 8845A multimeter as an audio frequency meter. Calibrated the receiver with a Bodnar GPSDO. Recorded CW audio frequency; removed fades and frequency outliers. Did a two-minute run on WWV 5 MHz after the 80-meter transmission to check conditions and analyses.
Soapbox: Strong signals on 40 meters and WWV. Significant QSB on the 80-meters. Thanks to Connie K5CM for his continued support of this interesting event.

Method: My ICOM IC-7000 - Calibrating with WWV...
- Finding: Dial reading tests 4 cps high using precedure below

- Test:
- Use LSB mode
- Find the desired signal (should be >6dB out of the noise)
- Tune to the nearest higher 1 KHz mark
to produce an off-frequency beat note within
the LSB bandpass of the Rx
- Note and measure the off-frequency CW tone
- Test #1 was 996 cps using cell phone with Spectroid app w/resolution = 1 cps
- Test #2 was 996.32 (avg of .73 to .07) w/resolution - .01 cps
This gives a "system" correction factor (2x comparisons favorable)
#1 of 4.00 cycles
#2 of 3.68 cycles
- Add tone frequency plus the correction factor to get true beat note
- Subtract true beat note from dial reading to resolve signal frequency

Soapbox: Both 40m and 80m signals were stable in strength at about S5. 40m signal had significant Doppler -- about 0.6 Hz overall variation across 12 separate 8 second measurements. Apparent Doppler on 80m was about 0.25 Hz. I averaged the 12 measurements for each band to get reported frequency.

Method: I use an HP-3586B receiver and a HP-3336A Signal Generator, both referenced to GPS. The 15.625 kHz I.F. of the HP-3586B is fed to one side of an oscilloscope and the other side of the oscilloscope is fed by the HP-3336A. The HP-3336A is adjusted to produce as stationary a 1:1 Lissajou pattern on the scope as propagation will allow. For details of my method see: http://www.k5cm.com/k6oqk%20fmt%20new.htm
Soapbox: 40-Meters was pretty good at my location, with not to much fading, but with some Doppler shift. Connie's 80-Meter signal was pretty weak so it took me longer than normal to home in on it. Once I did I was able to go to the 20 Hz wide filter and home in on it.

Thanks to Connie and Mike for FMT his work in making the FMT's such a greatevent, and for Pam for allowing him to escape to the Ham Shack. :> _Burt, K6OQK

Method involved phase locking the receiver's LO to the frequency of the unknown carrier minus a 1 kHz offset, measuring the frequency of the receiver's LO over several 10 second integration periods, and taking a "selective average" of the readings after factoring in the 1 kHz offset. Details available at: http://www.qsl.net/kd2bd/fmt-methodology.html
Soapbox: The Kp-index dropped from 3 to 1 around the time of the FMT resulting in stable propagation conditions. A few mishaps during the 40-meter run limited the number of measurements to only 2. On 80, Connie's signal experienced a number of deep and shallow fades. Thanks to Connie and the ARRL for supporting the FMT!

Method: I use an SDRPlay RSP2 SDR. The external reference input is driven by a 24 MHz signal from a home brew GPSDO. I use SDR Concole software version 3.01 to control the SDR. Later versions of the software introduce a .488 Hz tuning error. The audio output is sent to a Virtual Audio Cable that drives the audio input to WSJT-X version 2.0 running in the frequency calibration mode. Since the signal is digitized only once using the reference clock from the GPSDO there are no additional sampling errors.
Soapbox: Thanks for another great FMT. The was a lot of doppler on the 40 meter signal because the event occurred at our local sunset. It included a 15 second period with a steady +300 Millihertz shift followed by a 15 second -300 Millihertz shift. I assume this was caused by a reflection off possibly an aircraft. The 80 meter signal had much less doppler.

Method: HP3586B selective level receiver in LSB with: 75 ohms, Carrier, 20 Hz B/W, 1Hz step and 'set level'. G5RV antenna through tuner for 75 ohms. FE5608A Rhubid freq reference to HP3586B and HP3582 spectrum analyzer. Used a "zero" of 1850.066Hz tone when RF input from FE5608B at 10MHz with HP8316A counter from HP3586B.
Soapbox: The 40M run was with good levels and noise. The 80M run was good for about 45 seconds and then multiple doppler signals were seen at lower frequencies up to 0.6 Hz. WWV at 10 MHz and 5 MHz had dopplers at near 1 Hz lower doppler frequencies just following the test where they are normally only 0.3 Hz maximum midday. The HP3582 spectrum analyzer at 0.5Hz per division and 20 millihertz B/W clearly shows the dopplers to 0.02Hz resolution. 0.01 Hz resolution can be obtained using levels from the 0.02 Hz readings. Thanks to Connie K5CM for the experience.

Soapbox: Local collection at this QTH was solid on both carriers. KiwiSDR did not pick up 80m run but got good results on 40m. WWV estimator check helps. Doppler on 40m was very stable but 80m had maybe 0.1Hz of slope - still tricky. (Using a KiwiSDR near K5CM seems a bit unfair, so I didn't do it.) It remains the case that I/Q recording and ability to refine analysis are key. Hopefully the answers are somewhere within the ballpark. Thanks once again to K5CM. 73s to all.

HF2V antenna, FT-1000MP MK-V transceiver, Signalink USB sound card with input from the data port of the transceiver, HP 3336C signal generator stabilized with an external clock from a Lucent RFTG GPSDO and with the output fed to a T-connector in the antenna feedline through a 40 dB attenuator, DL4YHF's Spectrum Lab software to analyze audio from sound card. The sound card was calibrated before the FMT using the HP 3336C.

Method:
Tune the FMT signal to a beat note of about 700 Hz. Set the signal generator to produce a signal that is about 50 Hz different from FMT signal and with an amplitude similar to the FMT signal. I'm submitting two results for 80m, one referenced against 3.3 and 5 Mhz, and one against 5 and 10 Mhz, though only .183 hz apart, curious as to which is most accurate. Surprisingly, the 40m result referenced against 5 and 7.850 and 5 vs 10 are EXACTLY the same, so again, curious how I made out. Also thanks to my son, W3JST for his help with Excel.
