Method: HP Z3805A 10MHz GPSDO, Marconi 2019 HF synth, HP 3325A LF synth, HP 54601A o'scope, FT-847 in AM/narrow mode, 5BTV antenna, Win10 laptop running SpecLab, Digipan for spotting, EZGPIB driving USBserial and Prologix USB-GPIB to control and interrogate the instruments and radio, GPSCon for monitoring Z3805A; the 2019 was set to inject a reference beat signal to produce a ~400Hz beat tone, and the 3325A was manually tuned for minimum phase slip between it and the beat tone as seen on o'scope. Each run was also recorded to a .wav file through SpecLab, and at a later time replayed to export data to spreadsheet to refine submission numbers. Soapbox: Thanks once again Connie for running the event. All signals here were strong and surprisingly stable, although 40M late run reading was ~0.20 Hz higher than the early and 80M late run reading was ~0.14 Hz lower than the early. Guessed somewhere between early and late readings. 73, L-

Method: 98' long W5GI dipole oriented E-W connected to Icom IC-7000 (CW mode). SignaLink interface to laptop running Spectrum Lab. During call up, adjusted a GPSDO (Trimble Thunderbolt) referenced, HP 3335A frequency synthesizer to about the same frequency. After key-down, switched the radio input to the synthesizer (through an adjustable attenuator) and adjusted the synthesizer to the same frequency (used SL peak detect function). Read each frequency directly off the synthesizer. No radio or computer sound card calibration is needed with this method, but warmed both up for several hours so they were stable during the FMT. Soapbox: Both 40m & 80m signals strong in FN30. Lots of doppler on both frequencies. Thanks to K5CM for his FMT efforts.

Method: FLEX-1500 radio with Bodnar GPS disciplined 10 MHz Reference Clock. To measure the audio tone, I used Spectrum Lab with a 131072 point FFT which produces a width for one FFT bin of 91.55 milli-Hz and an FFT window length of 10.92 seconds. I calibrated my radio using CHU and a homemade clock divider that divides my 10 MHz reference down to a 1000 hertz audio tone. Then I tuned my radio to get as close to 1000 hertz as possible and interpolated the fraction of a hertz from the Spectrum Lab display. Soapbox: (none)

Method: Equipment is a Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V transceiver (CW mode, narrow CW filter and audio DSP with 60-Hz bandwidth), Rockwell/Collins 180S-1 tuner, 40-meter dipole, Fluke 8845A as an audio frequency meter. Record CW audio frequency; remove fades and outliers. Calibrate the receiver with a Bodnar GPSDO. Do a two-minute run on WWV 5 MHz after the 80-meter transmission to check conditions and analyses. Soapbox: Strong consistent signals on 40 meters. Variation on 40 meters and WWV 5 MHz was relatively low; there was more variation on 80 meters. Thanks to Connie K5CM for his continued support of this interesting event.

Method: IC-7300 and WSTJ-X frequency measure mode. Used a GPSDO to reference a HP3336C signal generator. I used that signal to calibrate WSTJ-X just before FMT started. Soapbox: Both signals were strong, but 40m reading especially did not give a stable reading in WSTJ-x, so I averaged the readings. I don't have much confidence in my answers.

Method: HF transceiver with random wire antenna and non-radiating injection coupling from synthesizer with fractional Hz resolution. Measured synthesizer error with WWV-10, then the 02xxZ signals, and applied correction from WWV-10 calibration check. Measurements were made with aural zero beat enhanced with SSB BFO ("3rd oscillator" technique). Soapbox: The signals were quite usable into central FL on this early run. Method: Comparison between the audio frequency of a generated signal against the unknown FMT test frequency. Soapbox: I'm not sure it's even worth reporting these results. I'm finding that the sound card in my SignalLink USB interface seems to have linearity problems. There is as much as a 62Hz error when changing the reference frequency by 1 kHz. The reference frequency is being generated by a GPS disciplined generator but is very harmonic rich and this may also be the cause of my problem. I wish we had an FMT more than twice a year so I could work through my issues. Six months from now I won't even remember the problems I had. Fun just the same, thanks...

Method: IC-9100, WJST-X Frequency Calibration mode, calibrated to WWV / CHU /AM broadcast stations two hours prior to measurement. Soapbox: Measured early run only. 40 meters was weak at S3 but clear carrier visible on the WSJT-X trace. 80 meters was strong at S9 with solid measurement. Hope the calibration was good! Thanks for running the FMT. I enjoy the challenge and appreciate the quick results posting.

Method: Injected signal from HP3336B into T connector so rig sees both on-the-air signal and RF from HP3336B. HP3336B used external 10Mhz frequency reference which is GPS disciplined. Rig is ICOM 7600 operating in USB mode. Homebrew software measures frequency of audio tones coming from rig to determine offset in Hz between signal from HP3336B and K5CM. Soapbox: All four FMTs were usable with noise at about S5. Signal level for K5CM at about S7. This was the case for 40m and 80 on both early and late runs. To get final reading I just averaged early and late runs for band of interest.

Method: IC-7610, 43' Vertical & SpectrumLab. Measurements corrected for reference error and best estimate of ionospheric Doppler. Soapbox: Could barely hear K5CM on 80M on the early run but I got some likely looking numbers just the same, and due mostly to my fumbling around, plus Growlight RFI, the early 40M run was nil. The late run signals on both bands were excellent, and spreading of the signals was less. FMT is great fun.

Method: Icon 7300 and audio tone generator. I began by finding WWV on 10 MHz and 5 MHz.I set frequency to 10.000.000 and adjusted the tone generator to match the tone noting the point of slowest standing wave warble. For my radio this was 600.4 hertz. During the broadcast I adjusted the rig to best match and submitted dial reading. Soapbox: Although I am an extra class license, this is my first attempt at FMT. The rig is new to me and I had to figure out how to display the frequency down to 1 Hz. I found the frequency spectrum scope helpful in that the test signal was remarkably clean and I could center it in the display. I hope I am close!

Method: FLEX 6600 with GPSDO & WSJT-X Soapbox: Early run at 0200z... 40 Meters was barely copyable on both runs with very weak, noisy signals. Cherry picked the hopefully best measurements and averaged them. Not too confident with the 40 Meter results. 80 Meters was again strong early but with much deep QSB on the late run but I screwed up on the early run by forgetting to write down the radio frequency so I made my best guess based on memory. I may have done well or NOT! My XYL doesn't place much store in my memory! Hope everyone did well!

Method: Used a homebrew superhet rig using VFO and BFO disciplined by GPSDO. The oscillators were from RIGOL DG4162 signal generator. An AGILENT 53181A frequency counter was used to measure the baseband frequency. Vertical antenna tuned for 40 meter band only. A series of measurements were recorded using the GPIB interface to the frequency counter. The unknown FMT frequencies were converted to a first IF of 9 MHz then to a baseband frequency of 4.915 MHz. The 4.915 MHz baseband signal was measured by the frequency counter and the unknown Frequency determined by calculation. Soapbox: Some rudimentary analysis of the data using a moving average of the frequency, suggests there was some Doppler shift during the test. Signal strength was goo for both bands and both runs with a few episodes of sudden, brief QSB.

Method: My SOP: K3 with P3 and home build AMD based PC with Spectrum Lab. Let the receiver warm up for an hour or so then calibrated local Osc to WWV on 5MHz. AV640 vertical. Soapbox: I was not as prepared for this one. There continues to be a certain level of guesswork that happens due to the rough resolution in Spectrum lab and my uncalibrated ear. Historically, I have not done too bad but this one I am not very sure about. Signals from Oklahoma were good to Austin on 80 but 40 meters seemed weak. Method: RF Space SDR-IQ receiver with DG8SAQ VNWA used in signal generator mode to inject offset frequency, VNWA clocked with Bodnar GPSDO. DDS errors determined with BG7TBL FA-2 counter (GPSDO ref). Audio beat recorded with SPectraVue SW for analysis with Spectrum Lab. Averaged two readings. Soapbox: Only my second try at this. Lots of fun but too many variables to account for by my method. Probably made some math errors. First measurement I recorded RF spectrum instead of demodulated audio. Demodulated that in post processing but not the best way to do it. Used FLDigi Freq Analysis mode by using USB mode and shifting down 1KHz to get a 1 KHz tone. Soapbox: My 2nd try at this - at 5:00 UTC the Ionosphere is MUCH more stable for Doppler shift (which is really what the biggest error inducer into the measurement is). Found a sweet spot on both runs to cherry pick the freq estimate.

Method: W4WJ FMT SET UP GPS: Lucent/Symmetricom Z3810AS RECEIVER: GPS Locked RACAL 6790/GM Tunable in steps of 1000Hz, 30Hz or 1 Hz. SYNTHESIZER: GPS Locked HP 3336B ZERO BEAT INDICATOR: Tektronix 2213A ANTENNAS: GAP Voyager, GAP Titan DX, NVIS Dipoles 40 & 80m CONFIGURATION: The post-filtered 455 KHz IF from the RACAL is fed to CH A of the Tek. A precise 455,000.000Hz carrier from the HP3336B is fed to the EXT input channel of the Tek. The scope is then set to display 2 cycles of the 455KHz IF waveform, instead of the traditional Lissajous pattern. PROCEDURE: Frequency readings to 1Hz resolution are quickly made by tuning the RACAL to near zero beat with the aid of the Tek scope. If a signal is “dead on” a Hz point, such as WWV, and there is no Doppler, the waveform will not “slip” in either direction but will just vary in amplitude with changes in signal strength, and the "exact" frequency will be the Racal frequency readout. If a signal is not "dead on" a 1Hz point, and the waveform is "slipping" L TO R, then the RACAL is tuned BELOW exact zero beat. If a signal is not "dead on" a 1Hz point, and the waveform is "slipping" R TO L, then the RACAL is tuned ABOVE exact zero beat. If “stepping” the receiver 1Hz causes the direction of "slip" to reverse, the exact frequency is BETWEEN the current and former readout, i.e. between two concurrent 1Hz points. Also, estimates closer than 0.5Hz, of the actual frequency, can be made by comparing the "speed" of the ABOVE and BELOW "slip." The slower "slip" is less than 0.5Hz from that 1Hz point. For more accurate “in-between-Hz” measurements, the RACAL is tuned ABOVE the unknown frequency and the HP3336B is then tuned upward, in 0.001Hz steps, from 455,000.000Hz until the R TO L waveform "slip" stops. The milliHz DELTA is then SUBTRACTED from the RACAL readout to give the “exact” frequency. Using the regular scope waveform allows very quick “zeroing” of signals, even those that are nearly in the noise. I find it much easier to use than the Lissajous pattern. It is also very interesting to note the carrier frequency variances that occur during Doppler shift. Soapbox: Y No 40m signal on either run! Nothing on the K3/P3 waterfall near the target frequency. Both 80m runs, signal peaked at -60dBm with slow deep QSB to -100dBm. Minimal doppler on both runs. Second run showed a delta of minus 0.058Hz. Posted the second run frequency as it was much more stable on the scope during the key down period than the first run. No spreadsheet or chart recording here! This is analog real time with one subtraction at the end! TNX agn to Connie for his continued efforts for the FMT and fmt-nuts. 73, Don, W4WJ
