Method: HP Z3805A 10MHz GPSDO, Marconi 2019 HF synth, HP 3325A LF synth, HP 54601A o'scope, FT-847 in AM/narrow mode, 5BTV antenna, Win10 laptop running SpecLab, Digipan for spotting, EZGPIB driving USB-serial and Prologix USB-GPIB to control and interrogate the instruments and radio, GPSCon for monitoring Z3805A; the 2019 was set to inject a reference beat signal to produce a ~400Hz beat tone, and the 3325A was manually tuned for minimum phase slip between it and the beat tone as seen on o'scope. Each run was also recorded to a .wav file through SpecLab, though this time I just used the display as a sanity check. Soapbox: Thanks Michael and Connie for running the event. Generally good signals this time, easy measurements though there was instability mostly on 80m. 73, L-

Method: 98' long W5GI dipole oriented E-W connected to Icom IC-7000 (CW mode). SignaLink interface to laptop running Spectrum Lab. During call up, adjusted a GPSDO (Trimble Thunderbolt) referenced, HP 3335A frequency synthesizer to about the same frequency. After key-down, switched the radio input to the synthesizer (through an adjustable attenuator) and adjusted the synthesizer to the same frequency as seen on the waterfall. Read each frequency directly off the synthesizer. No radio or computer sound card calibration is needed with this method, but warmed both up for several hours so they were stable during the FMT. Soapbox: Heard NO signal at all from W8RKO on 40m.

Method: Tuned using HP3586B Locked to Trimble Thunderbolt frequency reference. Sampled IF with computer soundcard and analyzed using SpectrumLab. Calibrated sound card frequency with signal from HP3336C locked to 10 MHz reference. Threw in a little bit of fudge factor from comparing to CHU. Soapbox: W8RKO 40m frequency was nearly inaudible but SpectrumLab pulled it out, although it was spread over a couple Hz. K5CM's signal started reasonably strong but faded some during key down. Both 80m signals were very strong. Going with a quick analysis for tonight's measurements.

Method: Receiver was Mercury SDR. Frequency measurement using WSJT-X. Freq reference OCXO calibrated to WWV and CHU. Soapbox: 40m was difficult! Signals in the noise. W8RKO was barely visible in the waterfall. K5CM was even weaker, had to guess when he went to the key down mode. Also there was an interfering signal almost exactly on frequency for a few seconds. 80m signals were good!

Method: Drake TR7 tranceiver receiver; Icom 7300 used as reference frequency into a Heathkit IM-4100 counter clocked with a HP 10544A OCXO in a homebrew controller. Soapbox: I tune the signal with a Drake TR7 producing a reasonable audio pitch. The IC-7300 produces the reference frequency that is tuned to the TR7 audio pitch by ear. The HP 10 Mhz OCXO is coupled to the IM-4100 clock oscillator to improve its accuracy. On the day of the FMT the HP OCXO is zero beat tuned by ear to WWV at noon. Thank you Mike and Connie for providing your signals for this fun exercise. Signal levels; 1st run S-10, 2nd run S-20 to S-25, 3rd run S-10 to S-14, 4th run S-15 & QSB.

Method: Set up is a Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V, 40-meter dipole, Fluke 8845A multimeter as an audio frequency meter. Calibrated the receiver with a Bodnar GPSDO. Use homebrew Excel spreadsheets to calibrate the receiver, correct for drift and calculate the unknown frequencies. I have used the spreadsheets for several FMTs, with varying degrees of success. :-) Soapbox: The K5CM-K0WM MUF was only 5.4 MHz so 40-meter signals were almost nonexistent. Strong K5CM signal on 80 meters and for W8RKO on both bands. Thanks to Connie and Mike for continuing support of this interesting event.

Method: Calibrated my Icom-7300 using the 5.000 MHz WWV signal and used FLDIGI to make my measurement during the event. The difference between where the WWV calibration tone appeared on the graft and the location of tones received during the FMT was either added to or subtracted from the radios dial freq. Soapbox: I had a great time. Thanks to both of you. Both 40 meter tones were down a bit but the 80 meter signals were excellent here in Florida.

Method: TX: HP Z3801 GPS frequency standard, HP-3336b. A 10 db transistor amp follows and drives a 12by7 / pair 6146. Then to the final amplifier (8877) running 800 watts out. There are no mixers or any device in the chain of amplifiers that might impact the accuracy of the GPS frequency source. RX: K3 in AM mode with low side injection from a GPS locked HP-3336B. Audio is feed to Spectrum lab. Soapbox: Mike's signal was already skipping over my Oklahoma QTH. His signal was split in to two components about .6Hz apart. As a general rule the real signal frequency will be higher near sunset, so I picked the higher of the two. Mike's 80 meter signal was much stronger with little apparent Doppler, much easier. 73, Connie / K5CM

Method: IC-9100 and WSJT in Freq Cal mode. Calibrated one hour before the test against on-air standard frequencies. Soapbox: All four transmissions were received. But K5CM's 40-meter signal had severe CW QRM within a few Hz of the carrier. I couldn't get a solid frequency measurement on WSJT.

Method: I injected signal from HP3336B into antenna using a T connector. Then I measured the audio tones from the receiver for the off-the-air signal and the injected signal. Then I used homebrew Fast Fourier Transform software to obtain the audio tones from the receiver. Soapbox: 40 meters signals from both K5CM and W8RKO were NIL and S2 respectively. I looked over the FFT bins from the receiver to try to see if I could detect any signal on 40m for K5CM, but I couldn't dig anything out from the noise.

Method: K3 in CW Mode, WWV, Spectrum Lab SW, Spreadsheet. Soapbox: I have to relearn this process every time. This time I'm going to document the process better to make it easier in the future. Method: IC-7610 using internal standard, 43' vertical, FLDIGI Freq Analysis mode and lots of time spent trying to model ionosphere corrections. Soapbox: After bragging to NF7R how straightforward I'd made the measurement process, I couldn't get hands and brain to work together during the 40M runs but I hope I managed something. Both K5CM and W8RKO sigs were weak here on 40, antenna maintenance would probably have helped.

Method: Used SA44B USB SA in zero span mode as IQ recorder, recorded in 3 kHz BW (centered at nominal callup freq), then shifted signal peak (nearest bin) down to zero IF and filtered recording down to 1 Hz BW (using FFT) before extracting phase. Measured slight residual phase slope to obtain final freq correction. Antenna was a DXE broadband amplified loop (inside house), oriented in plane running roughly NE to SW. Soapbox: Could possibly hear K5CM's 40m callup very intermittently, no real copy. Could not find his 40m key down signal at all (perhaps outside my 3 kHz IF passband?). Other signals heard well enough to work with. 'Twas great fun, as always. My QTH tends to be very much on the noisy side.

Method: Receiver ICOM R9500, audio was recorded and analyzed with a Mathematica notebook I wrote. This includes displays of frequency vs. time on a contour plot, displays of the chirp Z transform and a histogram of the frequencies. Soapbox: Signals on 80m were good without much Doppler. On 40m signals were very weak, and I didn't think I had much of a chance of getting anything useful. However on the analysis, signals were seen to be quite good. I'll be interested to see how close I come.

Method: All homebrew equipment including a carrier phase tracking receiver, a WWVB referenced frequency standard, end-fed 40 foot wire antenna, and a frequency counter. Method involved phase locking the receiver's DDS LO to the frequency of the unknown carrier minus a 1 kHz offset, measuring the frequency of the receiver's LO over several 10 second integration periods and taking an average of the readings after factoring in the 1 kHz offset. Details available at: https://www.qsl.net/kd2bd/fmt-methodology.html Soapbox: As was the case last November, I had no copy of Mike, W8RKO, on 40 meters. Connie was solid on 40, and both stations had good signals with minimal QSB on 80. The ionosphere was exceptionally stable with the Kp-index perhaps reaching as high as 1 during the FMT after flat-lining at 0 for much of the previous day. 73.000 de John, KD2BD

Method: Listen for call up and make initial keydown measurement with K3. Use GPSDO'd RSPdx SDR SAM DSB mode to resolve nearest tenth of Hz. Observe CHU and WWV doppler offset and subtract. Soapbox: So, so, so disappointed with the conditions on 40 meters. I had extremely marginal copy of W8RKO. The watery sound of What there as a signal sounded like I had a combination of his skywave and groundwave, and not enough of either! I did not hear that on either WWV or CHU at that time. And I'd like to kick the guy sending a series of 'Vs' and 'QRZ' over K5CM's 40 meter keydown. Anyway, a big thank you and 73 to K5CM and W8RKO for the time and effort. Method: Antenna: 40m OCF dipole at 28 ft Rig: IC-7300 Freq. standard: Bodnar GPSDO Computer: HP laptop Software: FlDigi, Xcel Method: The IC-7300 was powered on for 8 hrs prior to the test to allow room and rig temperatures to reach a steady state. The Bodnar GPSDO was set to the nominal test frequencies to determine the VFO offset error of the IC-7300 minutes before the test on each band. Frequency was measured using FlDigi every 0.1 sec (approx. 600 observations during each 1-min run). FlDigi wrote measurements to a .CSV file. Frequency measurements were imported into Xcel and sorted into ascending order. The central 200 measurements (approx. 1/3 of all readings) were averaged to arrive at the final frequency estimate. No correction was made for propagation disturbances. Soapbox: Connie's 40m signal was very faint at my QTH. The rest were S9 or above.

Method: IC7300 calibrated with Bodnar GPSDO. Software fldigi in FMT mode. Soapbox: The K5CM signal on 40m was extremely weak. I'm in north Texas, so maybe too close for a good ionospheric bounce? Or maybe I just didn't find it correctly. However his 80m signal was strong. For the 80m W8RKO test I forgot to turn on recording during my measurements and lost the data, so I only have my dial frequency. Duh! I have really enjoyed the FMT and look forward to the next one. Method: Antenna: OCFD; receiver: SDRplay RSPdx; frequency reference: Leo Bodnar GPSDO; SDR software: SDRuno; recording software: Fldigi in FMT mode using virtual audio cables from SDRuno; analyses: software written in Python. Doppler frequency shift recomputed at each transmitter frequency based on concurrent WWV 5 MHz data. Doppler frequency shift removed from each measurement, which are the averages of the tail ends of each transmission. It seems like it takes awhile for the Fldigi FMT tool to 'find' the transmit frequency -- I will want to experiment with other software in the future. The average recorded Doppler frequency shift was about .44 Hz at 5 MHz. Soapbox: This was my first time participating in the FMT, so I'm glad to just have been able to make (hopefully) reasonable measurements for all of the transmissions. I was in the K7UAZ University of Arizona shack for the event. A couple other students were also present to learn about accurate frequency measurements and the physics of the ionosphere. All of the signals were fairly strong.

The K3 was on for ~12 hours for temperature stability. Soapbox: I took a new (to me) approach to this test. I got wind of Joe Taylor's FMT tools in his WISP package. Normally, I do the old 'zero beat' and Spectrum Lab flow but wanted to see how this experiment would work out. Conditions were not that good at the QTH with a lot of static and some bozo interfering on 40 W5CM's attempt along with some deep QSB. I may have hurt my results but using USB for all measurements and the offset provided to the tools of 1500 Hz I think was incorrect; it probably should have been 600 Hz so results might be off by 900Hz. The resulting values did seem reasonable, however, but suspiciously very close to the advertised test frequency. Notice the values provided go down to milliHertz! I don't have an 80m antenna so I had to use the 40m vertical. This obviously brought down the signal strength but the S/N was acceptable enough to get reasonable measurements as the test stations seemed to be strong on 80m. I have a lot of doubt on my execution of this method as test day was the day I learned of WISP's capabilities for FMT support. Nothing like cramming for the exam last minute. All and all a fun experiment and results will guide me to try again next time.

Method: Bodnar GPSDO through stepped attenuator to directional coupler to SDR-IQ RX input. Bodnar set to ~1000 Hz below received signal. Record I/Q spectrum via SpectraVue S/W for later analysis. Play back with AM demodulation recovering difference frequency for analysis with Spectrum Lab S/W. Soapbox: I set my recording file size to capture 5 minutes and start recording at call up. I had a hiccup and captured only 2 seconds of W8RKO's 80 meter call up. Tough to analyze this so my reading is a real SWAG. My fault, I usually use redundant receivers and recordings. Thought I would simplify this time. Doppler/multipath was a big problem on all frequencies, so maybe it didn't matter. I saw 20-30 dB QSB on all runs. Method: Equipment: TS590S with 80m OCF dipole Signal Processing: Data collected with fldigi in "Freq Analysis" mode. Data were processed in a home made program written in R. Measurements were filtered to within 1 standard deviation of the mean. Simple external calibration against 2.5, 3.33, 5.0, 7.85, and 10 Mhz reference stations was performed to correct for dial error. The calibration stations were measured for approximately 10 min each after the final FMT measurement. No correction for "Doppler" based biases was performed. Results and estimated uncertainty: k5cm 80m: 3599153.01 +/- 0.05 w8rko 80m: 3598003.32 +/- 0.01 k5cm 40m: 7065850.21 +/- 0.02 w8rko 40m: no measurement. Soapbox: I'm an analytical chemist by trade so I used some code I already had on hand for filtering and analyzing data. I'm not sure how well this will work. Perhaps due to splitting of the received signal in the frequency domain? Some QRM on the target frequencies but the FMT tracking loop seemed to follow fine. K5CM's 40m signal here showed slow drift higher in frequency during the 1 minute run! The fldigi FMT measurement modem takes out the slow K3 TCXO drifting but when the target signals split in the frequency domain it makes it hard I think for the FMT modem to pick which peak to follow!
