Method: HP Z3805A 10MHz GPSDO, Marconi 2019 HF synth, HP 3325A LF synth, HP 54601A o'scope, FT-847 in AM/narrow mode, 5BTV antenna, Win10 laptop running SpecLab, Digipan for spotting, EZGPIB driving USB-serial and Prologix USB-GPIB to control and interrogate the instruments and radio, GPSCon for monitoring Z3805A; the 2019 was set to inject a reference beat signal to produce a ~400Hz beat tone, and the 3325A was manually tuned for minimum phase slip between it and the beat tone as seen on o'scope. Each run was also recorded to a .wav file through SpecLab, and at a later time replayed to export data to spreadsheet for a sanity check. Soapbox: Tnx Michael and Connie for running the event once again. Generally poor signals all around; not sure what I heard was W8RKO_80M, but measured it anyway. Hopefully I made no transcription errors like last time. 73, L-

Method: Received using HP3586B locked to 10 MHz GPSDO. Sampled and analyzed the audio IF from the HP3586 using SpectrumLab. In addition, used my HP3336C frequency generator to generate a signal compared to the IF signal using oscilloscope, modifying the generated frequency until the traces match relative to each other. Soapbox: Signals were generally strong into northern Virginia. A few oddities on some of the signals, where there was a very strong and stable component, but other components tended to spread and meander about. Also, my sound card was somewhat unstable, shifting by a Hz or so sometime during the evening. Hope I made my calibrations at the right time and it was accurate enough.

Method: Open HPSDR Mercury freq reference calibrated to WWV, CHU. WSJT-X Freq Cal mode. Soapbox: Thanks, guys for another good FMT! W8RKO's 30m signal was only about 10 dB above the noise here. We're too close. All other signals were great at least S9+10dB or more.

Method: K3s in CW Reverse mode compared to WWV at 20 MHz to establish a calibration factor. K3s is supposed to be zero beat when the CW tone is 400 Hz. I tuned each carrier for a 400 Hz tone on the WSJT-X waterfall. The WWV calibration factor was applied to the K3s readings. Soapbox: The last time I participated in a FMT was back in the 1970s. At that time I used a frequency counter borrowed from work to measure the three oscillators in my Heath SB303 receiver. This time I started too late to setup a good calibration system, and I relied on a measurement of the K3s offset from WWV at 20 MHz and the WSJT-X 400 Hz marker on its waterfall display. I only made measurements on W8RKO on 40 meters and 80 meters since his signal here in Tennessee on 30m was not audible. I had other commitments that evening so I was not able to listen for K5CM. I'm not expecting a very accurate result, but it sure was fun to participate in the FMT. I'll have a more sophisticated technique next time. 73, Walt, AJ6T

Method: Measure receiver audio frequency in the CW mode for the unknowns, WWV, CHU or a GPSDO standard. Use homebrew Excel spreadsheets to calibrate the receiver, correct for drift and calculate the unknown frequencies. I have used the spreadsheets for several FMTs, with varying degrees of success. :-) Soapbox: Strong steady signals for both stations on 30 and 40 m. There was a lot of QSB on 80 m. Frequency variation on 80 m was about twice the variation on 40 m. Thanks to Connie and Michael for continuing to support this interesting event.

Method: BG7TBL GPSDO, IC-7610. fldigi for measurements. Soapbox: This is my first try at this. The GPSDO is known to be accurate and stable, but I now realize a frequency agile reference would allow better results. The big mistake for me was that fldigi doesn't retain the wav file recording settings so I didn't get captures. Next time!

There are no mixers or any device in the chain of amplifiers that might impact the accuracy of the GPS frequency source. RX: K3 in AM mode with low side injection from a GPS locked HP-3336B. Audio is feed to Spectrum lab. Soapbox: Mike's signals were strong and easy to copy on all three bands. As I have mentioned before, strong signals does not mean Doppler is not present. Mike was a couple of kHz higher than expected on 80 meters, but was found quickly with no problems. RX: K3 in AM mode with low side injection from a GPS locked HP-3336B. Method: I used homebrew software which implements a spectral display. The display shows the signal from the FMT station and also an injected signal from an HP3336B. The HP3336B uses external 10Mhz time base which comes from GPS derived frequency standard. I look at all of the FFT bins making up the spectral display and choose the one with the most energy. My FFT bin size is 0.12207 Hz per bin. Sample rate of audio from receiver is 8000Hz. Number of samples per FFT is 64K. Soapbox: K5CM signals were about S5. I did not see even the slightest trace of W8RKO signal on either 80m or 40m. The bands have been much better the last month or so. I guess the solar cycle is helping propagation on the HF bands such as 17m, 15m, and 12m. However, propagation was marginal on 40m and 80m.

Method: All homebrew equipment including a carrier phase tracking receiver, a WWVB referenced frequency standard, frequency counter, and 40 foot end-fed wire antenna. Method involved phase locking the receiver's DDS LO to the frequency of the unknown carrier minus a 1 kHz offset, measuring the frequency of the receiver's LO over several 10 second integration periods and taking an average of the readings after factoring in the offset. Details at: http://www.qsl.net/kd2bd/fmt-methodology.html Soapbox: The Kp-index was 4 and there were thunderstorms in the area. A solar flux of 111 permitted solid copy of W8RKO on 10 MHz this year. In general, W8RKO's signals were stronger with less QSB than K5CM. K5CM's signals suffered the highest deviation in readings (0.325 Hz p-p on 10 MHz) while W8RKO had the lowest deviation (0.075 Hz p-p on 80 meters). Since all homebrew gear was used, simply being able to hear these signals is considered a personal success. 73.000 de John, KD2BD

Method: RX is RF SPace SDR-IQ + SPectraVue software. Known offset reference frequency is Bodnar mini GPSDO injected into SDR input via stepped attenuator and directional coupler. GPSDO adjusted for 600-800 Hz beatnote using AM demodulation in SDR. SDR-IQ I-Q output is recorded for later analysis. Analysis is with SDR-IQ playing back recorded file and using AM demodulation to output beatnote to SpectraVue. Soapbox: I picked up my wife from work but she needed to work late and I pulled into the garage 1 minute before the W8RKO 30-meter transmission. I managed to get a recording but I was so flustered that I set the GPSDO to the 40-meter frequency before writing down the 30-meter offset frequency. (I quickly learned to snap a phot of the screen before moving on) I've estimated it from the recorded file but I could be way off. I did manage to copy all test transmissions but everyone of them was plagued with QRM and/or QSB (multipath-Doppler) For example, I saw 25 dB QSB on K5CM's 80-meter transmission and 1 Hz Doppler was easy to see on the waterfall. This was my first use of the Bodnar mini GPSDO. It's easier to set to a frequency than the dual frequency version but it would be great to be able to have a set of presets ready to send at a press of a "button." Each one of these tests is a learning experience. Thanks, Connie and Michael.
